Two Chelsea High School Bowlers Heading to State Competition Saturday

CHS athletes Jesse Stebelton and Zack Stephenson will compete in Waterford on March 1-2.

The Chelsea boys' varsity bowling team has a lot to brag about this year.

The team finished its 2012-2013 season with a 15-2 record, and were this year's Southeastern Conference White Division champions.

On Saturday, two members of the boys team, Jesse Stebelton and Zack Stephenson will travel to Waterford to compete in the Division 2 state finals at Century Lanes. Stebelton placed fourth, and Stephenson placed 10th at the regional finals in Taylor on Feb. 23 to qualify for the finals.

"I believe our boys are well prepared for Saturday," coach Eddie GreenLeaf said. "They’ve worked hard. In my opinion, all six of our guys would've qualified for the finals based on their commitment. Jesse and Zack are there for a reason. Now its about taking the mechanics where they need to be."

GreenLeaf said he is extremely pleased with this year's boys' and girls' bowling teams.

"Overall both teams performed extremely well. They are hard working kids dedicated to their performance in the classroom and at the lanes. Our success exemplifies what this program is about," he said. "In the nine years of having a bowling program at Chelsea High School, this group of kids is one of the best I've seen."

GreenLeaf said he would like to see Dexter High School form a bowling club in the future to compete alongside Chelsea.

"I think there's a great opportunity for more schools to develop a bowling program for local athletes," he said. "Bowling is very popular right now."
