Obituary: Robert “Bob” Alan Salyer

Robert Salyer died on Feb. 21, 2013.

Robert “Bob” Alan Salyer, 60, of Chelsea, died on Feb. 21, 2013 at his home.

He was born Feb. 5, 1953 in Jackson, the son of Role Salyer Jr. and Roma Jean (Vaughn) Salyer.

Mr. Salyer graduated from Chelsea High School in 1971, where he excelled in sports and music. After graduation, he was in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

He attended Washtenaw Community College, worked for Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea during the '80s, and later went into sales, working as a sales manager for Harley-Davidson.

He coached and played softball in many leagues, and was a member of the American Legion Post 31. He enjoyed riding his Harley, traveling to warm beaches, and he loved to grill and entertain.

On May 15, 1993, he married Martha Kay Ewald in Chelsea, and she survives. Other survivors include his children: Brett (Mike Jones) Salyer of Alameda, Calif., Sarah (Tim) VanSchoick of Chelsea, Gregory McKeighan of Brooklyn, NY.; his sisters: Wanda (Don) Koengeter of Chelsea, Brenda (Annette Tector) Salyer of East Hampton, MA.; and his brothers: Rodney (Ann) Salyer of Chelsea, Howard (Patricia) Salyer of Salem, OR., and Mike (Adi) Sullivan of Rockford, IL.; many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins; and many loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 27 at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea, with Rev. Ann Salyer officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 31.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice, 900 Cooper St., Jackson, MI. 49202; or American Legion Post 31, PO Box 293, Chelsea, MI. 48118.
