Dexter Family Seeks Community's Help With Cancer Fight

Chelsea High School Drama Director Carrie Jay Sayer is raising money via an online campaign for her husband's cancer treatments.

Dexter resident Carrie Jay Sayer is reaching out to the community in order to generate awareness and help raise money to cover the cost of cancer treatment for her husband.

Ben Sayer was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a malignant tumor.

"Ben is our life-loving, compassionate husband, father and son. He means the world to us, and now he needs our help," Carrie Sayer said.

Sayer, who serves as the drama club director at Chelsea High School, said the family signed up for healthcare coverage under the federal government's Affordable Care Act, however coverage won't begin until January 2014.

"We asked Ben’s doctor if his surgery could be put off until January, and he said absolutely not," Sayer explained. "We went ahead, knowing it could be the difference between life and death.

"Now we face cancer treatments and mounting bills not only for the urgent testing and surgery, but for whatever lies ahead that we must do to save Ben’s life," she said.

The family is collecting donations online through the website YouCaring.com. As of Monday, donors have contributed $15,000 toward the goal of $42,937.

"We are asking people to give whatever they can," Sayer said. "Together we can create a miracle."
