Brush Up on Oral Health During National Pet Dental Health Month

Lane Animal Hospital in Chelsea is offering free dental consultations throughout February.

Your pet's bad breath and reluctance to chew could be a bigger problem than you think. That's why Lane Animal Hospital in Chelsea is offering free dental consultations for new and existing customers during National Pet Dental Health Month.

"We're trying to encourage people to participate in good oral health care with their pets throughout the year," Dr. Margaret Lane said.

While pet owners might balk at the idea of brushing Fido's teeth, Lane said it is essential to clean a dog or cat's mouth daily and have teeth examined at regular veterinary visits.

"Animals need regular dental care just like people," she said.

In addition to a free consultation and oral health exam, if a pet needs a dental cleaning, and owners schedule it within 30 days of the pet’s appointment, the hospital will honor 2012 cleaning prices ($175-$225).

The hospital is offering a 20 percent discount to any dental cleaning added to an elective procedure.

All pets will also receive a dental health goody bag with oral care products and literature.

"Given that most cleanings require general anaesthesia, we will work with pet owners on a case by case basis to determine if a cleaning is right for their dog or cat," Lane said.

The American Veterinary Medical Association, a sponsor of Pet Dental Health Month, offers an informative video giving step-by-step instructions on how to brush your pet’s teeth. The Pet Dental Month website, www.petdental.com, also includes tips from veterinary experts on pet dental health.
