Twelve animals died when a barn burned at a Chelsea-area property Thursday afternoon, a fire official said.

Chelsea Area Fire Authority Chief Jim Payeur said 12 lambs died in a barn fire near Hadley Road near Loveland in Waterloo Township before firefighters could rescue the animals.

According to Payeur, the department was dispatched to the property around 1:50 p.m. Upon arrival, the barn was "fully engulfed," and firefighters called for assistance from Stockbridge, Dexter, Scio, and Manchester fire departments.

As of 3:30 p.m., firefighters were still at the property.
